Cardinal Dery Fourth Colloquium: Project Statement

Theme : Thinking Pass Missionary Christianity and the Generation of Cardinal Dery ( Rev. Fr. Edward B. Tengan @70) Introduction By the beginning of the 1950s, missionary Christianity as propagated by the White fathers under the leadership Fr. R. McCoy and supported by the pioneer generation of converted Catholics led by, now ‘servant of God’ Cardinal Peter Dery, had taken firm roots in northwest Ghana. This was particularly so among the Dagaaba/Dagara and Sisaala populations. Signs that the local church in northwest Ghana was growing into maturity began to show with the ordination of Peter Poreku Dery to the priesthood in 1951. The mass numbers of people turning up every Sunday in the many parish churches that has been constructed between 1929 and 1951 was not waning but continued to grow and there were now more infant baptisms in each parish church than that of adult ones. Cardinal Dery Centenary Celebrations: May 2018 to May 2019

Launching: The national launching of the centenary birthday celebrartion of Cardinal Dery took w on 26th May at Jirapa during a Eucharist celebration presided over His Excellency Most Rev. Jean Marie Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio Ghana. Archbishop Philip Naameh of Tamale gave the keynote address. Delegates were invited from the Dioceses and Groups linked to Cardinal Dery. It was not meant to be a big celebration since there were to follow diocesan launchings afterwards. The launching was limited to a one day celebration (26th May); however, the Centenary activities were being planned to run  throughout the year (May 2018-May 2019). Synopsis: This book is a significant publication by Dery and has been the most influential up to date. It does not only recount the personal story of Dery's life and religious career which began as a priest in formation within Dagara religion and ended with his retirement as an archbishop of the catholic church, but also deal with heroic deeds of the first catholic missionaries who are responsible for the planting of Catholicism in Northern Ghana.
